Blossoms return with new single -'Joke About Divorce'

Stockport’s finest, Blossoms, are back with a tune - ‘Joke About Divorce’, which delivers classic indie groove, just in time for the summer!

Tom Ogden (lead vocals & guitar) and Myles Kellock (keys) of Blossoms were on Radio 1’s Hottest Records this evening for the first play of the new single.

Tom stated they are still in the process of making the new album, which is taking place at Tilehouse Studios.

He said: “It is more of an old school kind of method, recording to tape.

“When it is ready we are going to show the world!”

Myles added: "What I like about this one is we are just going into it and it doesn't feel like there is that much pressure.

“We are just going in there, no overthinking, jamming, hitting record!”

The track has been produced by Shawn Lee, who was also responsible for the guitar on Girls Aloud’s hit track ‘Sound of the Underground’.

The track is well structured with many call and action call backs, which I already envision will work great live with audiences.

Lyrically, it discusses the choosing of a moment to make a joke, and it not necessarily landing how you envisioned, as highlighted in the lines “You've got some nerve”, which continues the playful manner, much like the theming of the song.

Ogden, said: “It’s quite self explanatory, I made a joke about divorce and it was the wrong moment.

“Context is everything and I just mistimed it, it was the wrong moment, and I turned it into a three and a half minute song.

“This does have a similar feel to when we put out ‘Your Girlfriend’. If I can say so myself, we’re 10 years in now, and for me it’s getting to the top tier Blossoms songs I have written.

The bridge is as catchy as the body of the song, with drums from Joe Donovan, and another great bassline from Charlie Salt.

Whilst the chorus echoes about an argument not being the place for divorce jokes, the call backs from the band of ‘What have you got yourself into?’ and ‘Where's he going to spin to?’ bring a light-hearted twist to the themes.

All the lyrical discussions of how you should know better are further confirmed by surprise closing vocals by Rick Astley. Who in classic Rick style, appears on a television set up in the music video, which also stars Callum Scott Howells.

This is the first single since the band’s fifth album ‘Gary’', which was released in September 2024.

Whilst we are yet to know any album announcements, if this song is anything to go off, we will certainly be in for a boogie!
